The main border crossing from Michigan to Canada is the Ambassador Bridge, owned by Manuel Moroun, billionaire developer and trucking executive. The multibillion dollar proposed project, known as the Detriot River International Crossing is causing intense legal and political battles in Michigan. Moroun is seeking to upgrade his bridge as well as add a second span next to it. Canadian officials want a publicly owned bridge.
MDOT has requested proposals of interest from private investors who may wnat to partner with the state and Canada in building the planned new bridge between Detriot and Windsor, Ontario. Canada has also issued its own requests for proposals of interest in December and is currently constructing a highway that will provide access to the new crossing.
Canada has refused to allow Moroun to build a new span. The Ambassador Bridge currently dumps traffic directly onto residential streets in Windsor.
