US Manufacturing Leads to Rise in Truck Tonnage

February truck tonnage rose 5.5% from a year earlier according to the American Trucking Associations. This continued a pattern of grown that began late in 2009. Most of this increase can be attributed to the strength of US Manufacturing.

The Commerce Department indicated there was a 3/9% increase in 4th quarter gross domestic product and a 2.2% rise in durable goods orders in February. Orders for cars and computers were key factors for the increase in durable goods. Auto sales were the best in 4 years as they reached 14 million in the month of February.

According to the March 27th report, the advance seasonally adjusted index stood at 119.3, after the 27the consecutive year over improvement. It was was also the sixth gain in the past seven months.
