New Session of Congress Faces Looming Transportation Deadlines
After an extended holiday vacation, members of Congress return to a new session with looming Transportation deadlines. The first deadline, March 31, is the date the temporary extension for the latest transportation reauthorization law expires. The second deadline, when the Highway Trust Fund runs out of funds, could hit as early as August this year.
Transportation advocates say they are launching an aggressive advertising and lobbying campaign to persuade Congress to make transportation reauthorization it’s top priority. A two-year highway bill is currently being debated in the Senate and contains several provisions the trucking industry supports. However, many trucking industry executives feel that the prospects for the bill’s passing are not encouraging.
