Highway Bill Extension Signed
Obama signed a bill on March 18 2010 extending the Highway Trust Fund through the end of the year. The current authorization expired last September. Since then, highway and transit programs had been operating under several thirty day extensions.
In late February, Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) temporarily blocked passage of an extension, causing a shut down of the federal program for several days until an agreement was reached.
” The Highway Trust Fund funds the work of a million workers through the private sector,” said Senator Barbara Boxer, (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. The longer extension, Boxer said, will give Congress time to work on new highway legislation. “Now that this is behind us, we will focus on moving forward with a transformational transportaiton authorization that will create jobs and build the infrastructure America needs for economic recovery and long-term prosperity,” she said.
