For-hire Truck Tonnage Sees Biggest Spike Since 1998
Truck tonnage in 2011 saw the biggest spike since 1998, as reported by the American Trucking Association’s For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index. Year-over-year tonnage rose 10.5%. December’s tonnage was 6.8% higher than November’s numbers. ATA’s Chief Economist Bob Costello said, “While I’m not surprised that tonnage increased in December, I am surprised at the magnitude of the gain.” Orders for new Class 8 trucks jumped 47 percent year-over-year in December, resuming a positive trend that began in August.
