DOT Bans Commercial Drivers From Texting
Last week Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood issued a band forbidding commercial drivers for texting while driving their vehicles. “ I directed the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to use it’s existing authority to prohibit commercial truck and bus drivers from texting while driving using any handheld cell phone or other devices that takes driver’s attention off the road,” LaHood said during a Jan 26 press conference.
The order goes into effect immediately and significant fines will be instituted for those in violation. Drivers found to be using a handheld device to read or send text messages could be fined as much as $2750. “Today, we are sending a strong message. We don’t merely expect you to share the road responsibly with other travelers, we will require you to do so said LaHood.
