Driver detention is something most carrier, brokers, and shippers have had to deal with at least a few times. Detention is becoming a bigger issue due to the “hours of service” regulations that are currently in place. Listed below are a few suggestions to help in avoid higher shipping costs due to detention. They are as follows:
- On going communication between the shipper/carrier or broker. Make sure all parties are aware of loading times or appointment times.
- Scheduling delivery with consignee. The consignee should be informed of the delivery and the carrier/broker can schedule the delivery according to required delivery times or appointment times.
- If there is a delay due to mechanical issues, weather, or any other unforeseen circumstances, all parties should be notified and plan accordingly.
As you can see communication between all parties is essential. As long as everyone is on the same page with the pick up times and delivery times, detention costs can be avoided.
