ATA Economist “Cautiously Optomistic”
The American Trucking Association’s seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index was up 3.5% for the first two months of 2010 over the same period last year. ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello told CNBC “things are starting to pick up a little and we are cautiously optomistic” that will continue.
“I continue to hear from motor carriers that both the demand and supply situations are steadily improving,” Costello said in a statement. “Certainly it will take a while to make up the ground lost during the recession, but the industry is on the path to recovery.”
All America Transportation Inc.’s Vice President of Operations, Scott Parkinson, said “Clearly since the start of the year we have seen freight volumes increase. We have also seen additional business coming from clients who used to move regular lanes for very low rates with other 3PL’s that now are unable to move those same lanes for 2009 rates.”
